Coney Beach Porthcawl

I keep saying that I need to get back in to painting, however I fail to take my own advice!

Seabank Hotel Porthcawl

The weather has been great of late, so not much time has been spent, indoors painting!
Its not often we get good weather in the the UK so we need to make the most of it.
Last night (17/07/2017) I had the urge to start a new painting.
It had to be something small and quick.
Could I get an oil painting complete in the couple of hours I had available?
Well I chose to paint the view from just outside my apartment looking along the sea front to the Seabank hotel Porthcawl and as a quick test out finished within the evening!.

Need to get back to Painting!

Its been a while since I last finished a painting, this lovely weather we have been having has been making me enjoy the outdoors.
On the plus side I guess that will give me inspiration for the inevitable rainy days ahead!

Colourful Wood #2

Colourful Wood #2

With the play with mixed media looking close to my previous Colourful Woods and Tree of Life, I though that I would develop a series of Colourful Woods, using the technique of watering down the oil paint so that it works more like watercolour paint.

Below will be a step by step progression to completion

Autumn #2

Autumn #2 - 18x14"

Trees added along with a splash of colour.
I have been experimenting with epoxy resin to give the painting a nice sheen.....
Not going to well on the samples at the moment! The resin is just not drying, may just have to rethink this!!!!

Continuing to have a play with mixed media.
Another Autumn wood with fabric leaves in acrylic paint. I may finish this off and seal it with epoxy resin.

Not the best picture! But you get the idea!

Sun Rise Coney Beach

Sun Rise over Coney Beach

With the autumn approaching the sun is leaving it a little later to wake up! Driving to work in the morning I have been treated to several very nice sun rises, on 23rd of September i was leaving for work a little later than normal and managed to catch the Sun rising over Ogmore and Southerndown from the harbour in Porthcawl over looking Coney beach, fortunately I had my camera and go a couple of very good photographs (see photography section at www.nicholasjohnart.com
Well now that I have finished my Colourful Forest I thought it would be good to make a start on painting the sun rise.

20/10/2016 - Little more on the sea and the wet sand

19/10/2016 - Sea is starting to come along a little more from each days work

16/10/2016 - Update on the sea, coming along a little more now

12/10/2016 - had a "play" with the sea - Wasnt happy with the changes have blended back and need to do a little more work in that area

11/10/2016 - Further Sand and sea updated with reflections from the sunrise

10/10/2016 - I wasn't 100% sure that the sea and sand were working in this painting so I thought I would try something different and have attacked the painting with the pallet knife! Seems to be having the desired effect so far - lets see how it goes!

06/10/2016 - Little More to the Sky and the start of the sea

05/10/2016 - First nights work base colours down

ETSY Listing

Well I have dipped my toe in the waters of sales!
Though I would try listing a painting on ETSY to see how it works and to see what sort of response I get.

I have listed my Southerndown painting as;

Tree of Life! Yggdrasil

Nice to try a new technique for me.
Oil Paints greatly thinned down with turpentine, I have been working on several autumn treescape paintings, this is the only lone tree for the moment.
With all the Norse / Celtic tattoo work I have been having it seems fitting to call this one Tree of Life! Yggdrasil.
All work view-able through http://www.nicholasjohnart.com

Complete work 08/09/2016

Website - Nicholas John Art.com

It seems that as the summer draws to an end I have more time on my hands for my paintings.
To get ready for my new works I have revamped my Website;

http://www.nicholasjohnart.com

I currently have two works in progress, both of which are Autumn Trees.
Two very different techniques have been employed to create these works.

1. Pallet Knife

Thick layers of oil paint have been added to the canvas to create the current back ground for a Birch Grove with sunlight through from behind the trees Autumn leaves pending

2. Thin layers of Oil Paint

Oil Paint which has been greatly watered down with turpentine looking to create a colourful impressionist art work

All works can be viewed through the website as well as the blog page
